ENI - Building Tomorrow: The transition to Electric Construction Machinery

18 June 2025
Industry Symposiums
EV Transition S118 09:00 > 10:30 ENI - Building Tomorrow: The transition to Electric Construction Machinery E-Lectrified Stage - Room J1 EV Transition

09:00 INT49 How the construction industry is working together towards Zero Emission > T. Tobias Stöcker (Opheusden)
Content : The construction industry is a substantial source of emissions that negatively impact the climate, the environment and human health. Unlike passenger cars, the market for construction equipment knows a much higher diversity of machines with much lower sales volumes per model. Regulations are scarce to direct this market towards Zero Emission and the transition towards alternative drivetrains is only just beginning. Nonetheless, some regions have started to connect (public) clients, construction companies and equipment manufacturers in order to move ahead. This presentation will show how the Dutch sector has evolved and what has been learned.
09:15 INT50 Smart charging on the construction site through standardisation > F. Flip Oude Weernink (Arnhem)
Content : The Dutch electricity grid is increasingly facing congestion challenges. Smart charging plays a vital role in addressing this issue by optimizing electricity use, reducing peak loads, and preventing grid overload. BuildZero is an initiative led by ElaadNL aimed at accelerating zero-emission construction by enabling the electrification of heavy equipment on-site through standardization and smart charging. The program focuses on interoperability, safety, and usability, ensuring that machines from different manufacturers can charge efficiently and reliably. This presentation will share key insights into the potential of smart charging, the requirements for its successful implementation, and the first results from the BuildZero program.
09:40 INT52 Leading the way towards Zero Emission construction > K. Karl Uebel (Eskilstuna)
Content : A pioneer in electrification, Volvo Construction Equipment is leading a transformation that reshapes the industry, driving cleaner, smarter, and quieter worksites to meet the growing demand for construction worldwide in a more sustainable way. In this session, attendees will gain firsthand learnings from adopting electric worksites, from the emission-free machinery, to the infrastructure ecosystem, charging solutions, and connected digital site technologies. They will also get insights into how Volvo CE is navigating the complex transition across diverse market needs, supporting customers at various stages of their decarbonization journey, and how collaboration across the entire value chain is critical to drive real change and address critical challenges such as reducing air pollution in cities.
10:00 INT54 What does the electric construction market need to scale-up? > E. Espen Hauge (Oslo), S. Sachio Kunisawa (Tokyo), F. Fleur Malschaert (The Hague), T. Tobias Stöcker (Opheusden), K. Karl Uebel (Eskilstuna)
Content : Regions like the City of Oslo and the Netherlands have successfully started on the transition towards Zero Emission constructions. OEM’s like Volvo and Komatsu amongst others have recognized their roles in the transition. All parties increasingly seek collaboration to help the sector move away from diesel. We see some parties make good progress but also observe a lot of “chicken and egg” dilemmas. In this panel discussion, we will talk about the needs of the market to scale-up zero emission constructions, combining all the relevant perspectives of public client, policy maker, OEM and construction company.
