The contribution of software to value creation is expanding, benefiting not only car manufacturers but also for charging stations manufacturers. The capacity to deliver new features and functionalities via updates is becoming a crucial aspect of competitiveness. Software delays the premature obsolescence of expensive hardware, maintaining its value over time. Regular updates result in reduced maintenance costs and increased system availability.
To capitalize on emerging opportunities, it is essential to move away from a current practice of integrating proprietary software solutions with other proprietary systems, which is costly. It's more beneficial for charging station manufacturers to pursue an open source approach rather than using proprietary solutions. Proprietary solutions can result in vendor lock-in and long-term dependencies, which are undesirable. To ensure maximum interoperability between infrastructure, charging stations and vehicles and to build future-proof solutions, it is essential to have a standardized operating system for charging stations based on open source technology.
The main benefits:
- Minimizing initial expenditures and ensuring economical long-term operation
- Reducing the proprietary lines of code (LOC) means reducing maintenance costs
- Eliminate comprehensive testing efforts by using a uniform implementation of EV charging communication protocols
- No more reinventing the wheel: Just go with the flow and update to future standards and requirements
